The polished diamonds export from India went from Rs. 8000 crores to Rs. 12,692 crores increasing for the first time ever since COVID-19. According to the Gems and Jewellery Export Diamond Council (GJEPC) this export has risen by 41% from December 2019 to December 2020.
With the nationwide lockdown, the diamond industry was facing a major blow. Even while reopening, several workers from the industry tested COVID-19 positive. This slowed down the labour. While the diamond export rate had gone down to 30% in April, it massively increased towards the end of 2020.
This global pandemic had entirely disrupted diamond exports from Surat, but the festive fervour of Christmas brought a massive increase in the demand for the supply of polished diamonds. Diamond Experts believe the increased growth in exports is mainly accredited to the holiday season in the US and China that gave the diamond sector a much-needed boost
